The nickel–cadmium battery is a type of rechargeable battery using nickel oxide hydroxide and metallic cadmium as electrodes. The abbreviation NiCd is derived from the chemical symbols of nickel and cadmium. NiCd batteries have a longer shelf life of around 10 years. Dual circuit exit signs. These unit allows the fixture to have dual power feeds. The idea behind this is so that when on normal power, the fixture is fed from a switch leg and can be turned off by the occupant. The PTS relay coil is fed by unswitched normal power. The normal power from the switch leg is connected to the normally open contacts on the PTS relay.

Title 20 is part of the CEC's Appliance Efficiency Regulation and California Code of Regulations that requires manufacturer certification of "self-contained” lighting control devices in California.
