An emergency light is a lighting device with a battery backup that switches on automatically when a building experiences a power outage. Emergency lights are standard in commercial and high occupancy residential buildings, such as college dormitories. A nickel metal hydride battery, abbreviated NiMH or Ni–MH, is a type of rechargeable battery. A NiMH battery can have two to three times the capacity of an equivalent size NiCd, and its energy density can approach that of a lithium-ion battery.

New York City has very specific codes regarding emergency lighting and signage. In short New York City approved exit signs must be Red 8 inch tall letters with a 1 inch stroke (line thickness) as opposed to 6 inch tall with a 3/4 inch stroke in typical exit signs.
