An emergency light is a lighting device with a battery backup that switches on automatically when a building experiences a power outage. A nickel metal hydride battery, abbreviated NiMH or Ni–MH, is a type of rechargeable battery. A NiMH battery can have two to three times the capacity of an equivalent size NiCd, and its energy density can approach that of a lithium-ion battery.

The main housing of these exit signs and emergency lights is painted white or made from a white thermoplastic.

Remote capable exit signs or emergency lights allow the unit to add additional lighting with remote light heads without adding additional fixtures.
