An emergency light is a lighting device with a battery backup that switches on automatically when a building experiences a power outage. New York City has very specific codes regarding emergency lighting and signage. In short New York City approved exit signs must be Red 8 inch tall letters with a 1 inch stroke (line thickness) as opposed to 6 inch tall with a 3/4 inch stroke in typical exit signs.

Hazardous location exit signs and emergency lights are designed to operate in hostile environments that would damage ordinary signs and lights.
