An emergency light is a lighting device with a battery backup that switches on automatically when a building experiences a power outage. Emergency lights are standard in commercial and high occupancy residential buildings, such as college dormitories. New York City has very specific codes regarding emergency lighting and signage. In short New York City approved exit signs must be Red 8 inch tall letters with a 1 inch stroke (line thickness) as opposed to 6 inch tall with a 3/4 inch stroke in typical exit signs.

The main housing of these exit signs and emergency lights is painted white or made from a white thermoplastic.
