New York City has very specific codes regarding emergency lighting and signage. In short New York City approved exit signs must be Red 8 inch tall letters with a 1 inch stroke (line thickness) as opposed to 6 inch tall with a 3/4 inch stroke in typical exit signs.

Red letters are required for New York City and Chicago approved exit signs.

AC only exit signs do not include a battery backup or charging circuitry and are for installation and use only where emergency power is supplied from a remote or secondary AC power supply.

Federally approved high temperature 4.8 Volt exit sign and emergency lighting NiCd batteries. A 4.8 Volt NiCd has four AA, AAA, C, Sub-C, D or F cells in a battery pack that can come in a variety of configurations. Most common are cube, row and stick configurations.

Edge-lit exit signs come in a variety of housing colors and clear acrylic "EXIT" panel with either red or green letters. They are favored for their high-end look and aesthetic appeal by architects and designers alike. Double-sided models can have a mirrored or solid face that allows the sign to be read from either direction. In-field applicable arrows (chevrons) can be installed as needed.
