New York City has very specific codes regarding emergency lighting and signage. In short New York City approved exit signs must be Red 8 inch tall letters with a 1 inch stroke (line thickness) as opposed to 6 inch tall with a 3/4 inch stroke in typical exit signs.

The idea behind this is so that when on normal power, the fixture is fed from a switch leg and can be turned off by the occupant. The PTS relay coil is fed by unswitched normal power. The normal power from the switch leg is connected to the normally open contacts on the PTS relay.
